Bath and Prehistoric Stone’s of Avebury - 2 day Personal Guided Tour in Britain

Bath and Prehistoric Stone’s of Avebury - 2 day Personal Guided Tour in Britain
2 full days spent exploring the marvelous Georgian city of Bath, in Southern England and the world famous prehistoric stone circles of Stonehenge and Avebury. This part of England has one of the highest concentrations of prehistoric monuments in Britain, so as well as visits to the major sites of Stonehenge and Avebury, we will also see many other burial mounds, standing stones and other ancient earthworks.
Day 1
After meeting at Bath railway station, we begin our day with a walking tour of this designated World Heritage city, with its fascinating Roman, Medieval and Georgian history.  We will visit the excavated Roman Baths, one of the best preserved in Europe, as well the Royal Crescent, the Circus and many other by-ways of the city. We will also see Bath Abbey, the Assembly Rooms and the Fashion Museum.  The late afternoon will be free for shopping and exploration.
Day 2
After breakfast, we start the day a visit to the Avebury World Heritage Landscape. We visit Silbury Hill, the largest man-made hill in prehistoric Europe and enter the 5500 year old burial chamber of West Kennet Long Barrow, entering a sacred space originally reserved only for ritual specialists and the dead. After which we visit the Neolithic henge monument of Avebury, the largest stone circle in Europe, with its beautiful medieval village situated inside. As John Aubrey, the 16thC antiquarian, noted in the 1600's…’(Avebury) does as much exceed in greatness the so renowned Stonehenge as a Cathedral doeth a parish church.’
After lunch in a local country pub, we explore the landscape surrounding Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain. We start by visiting Durrington Walls, the ‘Stonehenge builder’s village’ and Woodhenge. We will have the chance to see several burial mounds, the site of the Stonehenge Cursus and finally the Stonehenge Avenue. The day will finish with a private access visit to Stonehenge, an opportunity limited to a handful of visitors, where Roy will delve into understanding this enigmatic and ancient monument.  One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is the remains of a ring of standing stones set within a series of earthworks.
Day 3
After another splendid breakfast we run you back to the railway station, however there is the opportunity to add an extra day to visit Wells and Glastonbury.

Cranborne Chase

Cranborne Chase is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) which straddles the counties of Dorset, Wiltshire and Hamshire. The area is named after the village of Cranborne, founded by the Saxons, which had a manor house and a small monastery. The word "chase" comes from the hunts, frequented by royalty (including Kings John, Henry VIII and James I), which took place on the downs. Cranborne Chase is a beautiful and dramatic landscape, with areas of rolling chalk grassland, ancient woodlands, chalk escarpments, down land hillsides and chalk river valleys each with a distinct and recognisable character, and which covers several hundred square miles.

Knowlton Henge and Church

The area has a long archaeological history and there are many Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments, including the henge monument at Knowlton, as well as the remains of a number of Iron Age settlements on the downs, most notably the hill fort at Badbury Rings (Vindocladia).  The landscape is quiet and secluded, with just a few picturesque villages like Cranborne and the quaintly named Sixpenny Handley.   Major towns are found on its border and Wimborne Minster, Blandford Forum (the finest and most complete Georgian town in England), Shaftesbury, and Wilton are all worth a visit. To the north east is the wonderful city of Salisbury.

Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset

Cranborne Chase is a wonderful area to explore and one of the little-known gems of Southern England!
