This small group (8-10 people) tour of England will start in the magnificent city of Bristol and end in the historic, maritime city of Portsmouth.
We at Afootinbritain.com have put this tour together because of the numerous requests that we have received.
It will include four of your dinners, all breakfasts and two picnic lunches. You will get the personal support of your own tour guides (there will be 2 of us), and the use of 2 vehicles. All admissions, taxes and tolls are included, but you must provide all transport to Bristol and from Portsmouth. Because we will have the use of 2 vehicles, we will have the flexibility to offer a variety of walks and treks as alternative excursions, to those listed below.
On the first day of the tour,we will meet with the group in our central Bristol hotel, in order to provide a brief orientation of the tour and the city. We will dine in one of our favourite restaurants and take in the night-time, view of the city from its world famous suspension bridge.
On day 2 we will take a lovely drive down to Hartland Point, on North Devon's portion of a staggeringly beautiful World Heritage coastline, stopping at Dunster Castle and Porlock Weir for lunch, on the way.
Upon arrival in North Devon we will go for a short walk to take in the sea air and views of the high cliffs, as well as a very peaceful churchyard, before going for dinner.
On day 3 we will drive up to Hartland Lighthouse before visiting more of the World Heritage site, the village of Clovelly. This is an ancient village that clings dramatically to the side of Dartmoor, whilst overlooking Lundy Island. We will take you on a guided tour of the village and its quayside, explaining a little about the role that such villages have played in English history. After lunch we'll visit the ancient port of Appledore and its sister village of Northam.... Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh knew these places well !
On day 4, we'll drive you down to Tintagel, where we will hike up to the ancient home of King Arthur. Dinner tonight will be in the seaside village of Instow.
On day 5, the group will travel down to Padstow in Cornwall. we will take an excursion to a wonderful fishing village called Port Isaac. Have you ever seen the TV series 'Doc Martin'?
Upon arrival in the beautiful fishing village of Padstow, we'll give you a brief orientation and then take you for a seafood dinner that you'll never forget..... In one of the world famous 'Rick Steins' restaurants.
On day 6. We head inland to spend the day exploring the botanic wonders of the Eden Project.
This site is a former china clay quarry, that has been turned into the world largest system of bio-domes. This is botany on a truly vast scale.
On day 7 We visit the time capsule that is Lanhydroc House.This is a National Trust property that has one of the most important Victorian interiors in the world. Its gardens are beautiful as well. It is also where the curator has recently discovered one of Henry V111s lost manuscripts. You will be on you own for dinner tonight, but we will be on hand to help with transportation and ideas (as we will throughout the tour).
On day 8 we head South and return to Devon. Plymouth is a large and very important naval city and we'll call it home for a couple of nights. Upon arrival in Plymouth, we'll provide a walking tour of Plymouth's Hoe, and explain the part that it played in forging an empire, as well as the role it played during WW2.
On day 9 we'll explore why Plymouth is important to Americans, and visit The Barbican, where we'll set you loose to explore the city, and perhaps take a boat tour of the bay.
On day 10 we will use steam as our mode of transportation, to see some of South Devon's beautiful scenery. On our way, we have arranged for you to have a wine tasting..... yes the English do make wine !. All aboard !!! Tonight you'll be free to have dinner in Plymouth on your own.
Day 11 will see the group moving into Dorset. We will take a very scenic drive along the chalk and limestone cliffs of Dorset. A beautiful walk to Durdle Door will be followed by an awe inspiring look at Maiden Castle. Here we'll have a relaxed picnic lunch whilst learning a little of the impact that the Romans had on the people of Southern England.
Upon arrival at our hotel in Portsmouth we will give you an orientation of the town.
Day 12 is when we all get chance to visit some ships. Henry VIII's flagship, The Mary Rose, met an untimely demise in the waters surrounding Portsmouth, and today there is a new, state of the art museum, that lets you discover how sailors lived aboard these warships. 50 feet from the Mary Rose, is Admiral Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory and with the aid of a water taxi we can visit the submarine museum.
On Day 13 we'll drive out of the city and visit the magnificent Winchester Cathedral, a church that was first founded in 642 AD and is where a number of Kings are buried. We will also have the opportunity to visit the Roman shore fort of Portchester. This is a massive Roman structure, originally built to protect the shores from marauding Saxons'. Tonight we will all have dinner together in Portsmouth, and reminisce about a wonderful adventure, shared.
On day 14 we will enjoy breakfast together, and we will then help you get to the airport or railway station, in a timely manner for your connections.
Cost for this tour is $5595 per person based on double occupancy. A single supplement of $725 per person can be arranged.
2 picnics will be provided, as well as 4 dinners.

Your guides will be available to you 24 hrs a day, during the tour.
